Why Does an OEM Manufacturer Need Drawings?
When discussing a new OEM hardware project with a customer, we are often asked:
“I already have product photos. Why do you still need drawings?”
From a customer’s perspective, a clear photo may seem sufficient to show what the product is.
From a manufacturer’s perspective, however, photos can help us understand the general appearance, structure, and possible manufacturing process of a product, but they usually cannot provide enough information for accurate quotation, production, and quality control.
At XINYU Hardware, drawings are more than documents used to confirm dimensions. They serve as an important technical reference throughout the entire OEM process—from quotation and sampling to mass production and inspection.
1. Why Can’t You Quote Based on Photos Alone?
Photos are useful for preliminary evaluation, but they cannot completely replace technical drawings.
Two products may look almost identical in a photo while having significantly different manufacturing costs.
The differences may include:
Material: carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, zinc alloy, etc.
Material thickness
Product weight
Dimensional tolerances
Welding, stamping, casting, or machining requirements
Surface treatment
Coating or plating thickness
Corrosion-resistance or salt spray requirements
Thread specifications
Hole locations
Assembly requirements
Many of these details simply cannot be determined accurately from a photograph.
If a manufacturer provides a quotation based only on a picture, the price will inevitably be based on assumptions.
If the actual specifications later differ from those assumptions, two common problems may occur:
The price changes, or the finished product does not meet the customer’s expectations.
That is not how we prefer to approach OEM manufacturing.
Our goal is not simply to look at a photo and offer the lowest possible price. We prefer to first understand the actual product requirements and then evaluate the cost based on the correct material, construction, manufacturing process, and quality standard.
2. Don’t You Have Standard Products?

We have manufactured a wide range of hardware products and accumulated extensive production experience. However, OEM manufacturing is fundamentally different from simply selling standard catalog products.
Even if we have previously manufactured something very similar, the specifications used for another customer may not be suitable for your application.

These requirements need objective standards.
A drawing transforms quality inspection from:
“It looks about right.”

5. Drawings Also Help Reduce Long-Term Costs

But when a project moves into accurate quotation, sampling, tooling, mass production, and quality control, we need a more precise technical standard.

It is not about creating additional work for the customer.
